Research & Analysis
Our Commitment to Science-Based Tourism
At NatureRoam, we believe that eco-tourism should actively contribute to scientific understanding and conservation. We partner with Romanian universities and research institutions to integrate citizen science into our tours and support ongoing monitoring efforts.
Through our guided expeditions, we've helped collect valuable data on wildlife populations, plant communities, and habitat health across Romania's diverse ecosystems. This information supports conservation planning and helps track the impacts of climate change on sensitive Romanian landscapes.
Wildlife Monitoring Projects
Our collaboration with the Romanian Wilderness Society has established camera trap networks monitoring large carnivore populations in the Carpathians. Tour participants help review footage, maintain equipment, and document wildlife signs during guided hikes.
Botanical Surveys
Our botanical discovery tours contribute to ongoing plant diversity monitoring across alpine meadows and old-growth forests. Participants help document flowering times, population health, and range changes of endemic plant species.
Avian Research
In the Danube Delta, our tours assist bird migration studies through standardized observation protocols. Tour participants contribute valuable data on timing, species composition, and behavior of migratory birds in this critical flyway.
Our History
2010: The Beginning
NatureRoam was founded by Dr. Elena Popescu, a Romanian ecologist, and Michael Thompson, a British naturalist. Their vision was to create truly immersive ecological experiences that would connect visitors to Romania's natural heritage while supporting conservation efforts.
2013: Conservation Partnerships
We established our first formal partnerships with Romanian conservation organizations, including the Carpathian Wildlife Foundation and the Danube Delta Institute. These collaborations allowed us to integrate scientific research into our tours and contribute directly to local conservation projects.
2017: Sustainable Tourism Award
NatureRoam received the European Sustainable Tourism Award for our innovative approach to low-impact wildlife watching and community integration. This recognition helped us expand our programs to new regions of Romania and build additional community partnerships.
2020-Present: Growth & Innovation
Despite global challenges, we've continued to innovate with virtual tours, expanded educational programs, and deeper community integration. Today, NatureRoam operates across all major Romanian ecosystems and employs a team of 18 guides and specialists committed to authentic, sustainable eco-tourism.
Success Stories
See how our eco-tourism initiatives have made meaningful impacts on both conservation efforts and local communities throughout Romania.
Carpathian Bear Project
Through our wildlife tourism programs and partnerships with conservation organizations, we've helped establish three new bear monitoring corridors in the Carpathians. Tour fees directly fund bear-friendly agricultural practices in local communities, reducing human-wildlife conflict by 47% in participating villages.
Village Revitalization Initiative
Our Rural Cultural Immersion program has helped revitalize traditional crafts and agriculture in six Romanian villages. By creating sustainable tourism income for families, we've helped reduce rural outmigration and preserve traditional ecological knowledge and sustainable farming practices.
Danube Delta Restoration
Our delta tours have directly contributed to wetland restoration efforts by funding the replanting of 18 hectares of reed beds and the restoration of natural water flows. Tour participants have contributed over 1,200 volunteer hours to debris cleanup and invasive species removal efforts.
Youth Environmental Education
Through our community outreach programs, we've provided environmental education to over 3,000 Romanian schoolchildren. Our "Future Guardians" program brings rural students into nature and builds awareness about local conservation challenges and traditional ecological knowledge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Romania for eco-tourism?
The ideal time depends on your interests. For wildlife watching and hiking in the Carpathians, May to September offers the best conditions. Bird watching in the Danube Delta is excellent during spring migration (April-May) and autumn migration (September-October). For botanical tours, the alpine wildflowers peak in June and July. Winter tours focus on tracking and wolf watching, with December to March offering the best snow conditions for these specialized experiences.
How physically demanding are your tours?
We offer a range of tours to accommodate different fitness levels. Our Carpathian hiking expeditions are moderately challenging, requiring the ability to walk 10-15km per day on mountain trails with some elevation gain. Danube Delta tours are less physically demanding, with most exploration done by boat. Cultural immersion and botanical tours involve light walking and are suitable for most fitness levels. We clearly indicate the physical requirements for each tour on its detailed page, and we're happy to discuss options for customizing experiences to accommodate specific needs.
What accommodations can we expect during tours?
Accommodations vary by tour type, but all meet our standards for comfort, cleanliness, and sustainability. In rural areas, we stay in renovated traditional houses or locally-owned guesthouses that offer authentic experiences while providing modern amenities like private bathrooms and comfortable beds. Our mountain expeditions include stays in mountain lodges and occasionally camping in high-quality equipment that we provide. In the Danube Delta, we use small, locally-owned boutique hotels or traditional fishermen's houses that have been converted to guesthouses. All accommodations are chosen to minimize environmental impact while supporting local communities.
What kind of wildlife might we see on your tours?
Romania hosts an incredible diversity of wildlife. In the Carpathians, you might spot brown bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, red deer, and numerous bird species including eagles and woodpeckers. The Danube Delta is home to over 300 bird species, including pelicans, herons, egrets, and rare raptors. You'll also encounter diverse reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals across various habitats. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, our expert guides know the best locations and techniques to maximize your chances of observing these amazing animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
How do your tours support conservation and local communities?
Sustainability is at the core of our business model. We direct 5% of all tour fees to specific conservation projects in the areas we visit. We exclusively employ local guides, stay in locally-owned accommodations, eat at local restaurants, and incorporate traditional products and experiences into our tours. This approach ensures tourism revenue benefits local economies and incentivizes conservation. Our travelers contribute to citizen science projects through wildlife monitoring and habitat assessment activities. We also provide training and employment opportunities for rural residents transitioning from extractive industries to sustainable tourism work, creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods that support, rather than degrade, local environments.
