About NatureRoam
Discover the story behind Romania's premier eco-tourism company and our mission to share and protect our country's natural treasures.
Our Story
Founded in 2010 by Dr. Elena Popescu and Michael Thompson, NatureRoam was born from a shared passion for Romania's stunning natural landscapes and a desire to protect them through sustainable tourism. What began as informal wilderness tours for friends has grown into Romania's leading eco-tourism provider.
Dr. Popescu, a Romanian conservation biologist, and Thompson, a British naturalist and photographer, met during a research expedition in the Carpathians. Both were troubled by the environmental challenges facing Romania's wilderness areas, but also inspired by the potential for tourism to support conservation.
Starting with just two guides and a handful of tours, we've grown to a team of 18 specialists operating across all of Romania's major ecosystems – from the Carpathian Mountains to the Danube Delta. Throughout this growth, our core mission has remained unchanged: to create authentic experiences that connect people with nature while supporting local communities and conservation.
Our Mission & Values
Sustainable Tourism
We believe tourism should leave a positive impact on natural environments and local communities. All our operations follow strict sustainability guidelines, from carbon-neutral transportation to zero single-use plastics.
Community Partnership
We work hand-in-hand with local communities, creating economic opportunities through tourism that support traditional livelihoods and preserve cultural heritage. We employ local guides and use locally-owned accommodations.
Conservation Impact
We dedicate 5% of profits directly to Romanian conservation projects and integrate citizen science into our tours. Our guests contribute to wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, and environmental education.
Our Achievements
European Sustainable Tourism Award
Received in 2017 for our innovative approach to low-impact wildlife tourism and community integration. Our model has been highlighted as a case study for sustainable tourism development in protected areas.
15,000+ Wildlife Observations
Our tours have contributed over fifteen thousand wildlife observations to Romanian conservation databases, helping researchers track population trends of key species including bears, wolves, lynx, and rare birds.
€175,000+ for Conservation
Since 2010, we've contributed over €175,000 to Romanian conservation projects, supporting wildlife corridors, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching initiatives across the country's most critical ecosystems.
42 Community Partners
We work with 42 local communities across Romania, from mountain villages to delta settlements. These partnerships have created sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of rural residents through eco-tourism.
